The purpose of the Lewis B Sheiner Lecturer Award is to recognize the outstanding lifetime achievements of a distinguished scientist or researcher who has continued the legacy of excellence in pharmacometric research and leadership established by Lewis B. Sheiner. In particular, pharmacometric scientists or researchers involved in the application of the circle of excellence: Integration–Innovation–Impact (JCP 2010;50:S6-S160) to enhance research, development, regulatory evaluation, and/or utilization of therapeutic products may be considered for this award.
Eligibility Criteria
The candidate must:
- Be a leader and actively advance and impact the scientific discipline of pharmacometrics
- Have a continued track record of quality scientific publications in pharmacometrics
- The following individuals are ineligible for ISoP Award nomination during AND until one year after completion of serving their term or stepping down from their position:
- ISoP Board members (Executive Committee members included)

More about Dr. Lewis B. Sheiner
Dr. Lewis B. Sheiner, MD, PhD (honoris causa), also known as the father of the “learn and confirm” paradigm of drug development, is internationally recognized for his work in pharmacokinetic (PK) and pharmacodynamic (PD) modeling and simulation. He pioneered the scientific discipline of pharmacometrics with an academic career focused on developing and applying mathematical and statistical methods to problems in clinical pharmacology. In a close and extended collaboration with Dr. Stuart Beal, they developed the methodology for the population approach to PK/PD, based on the estimation of non-linear mixed effects modeling (NONMEM), and further developed the NONMEM software system. The latter quickly became the standard software in many pharmaceutical industries and at the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for characterizing PK and PD data acquired during clinical drug studies.
Dr. Sheiner authored more than 200 articles and book chapters. He served on the Editorial Board of Clinical Pharmacology & Therapeutics and was an editor of the Journal of Pharmacokinetics and Pharmacodynamics. He was a former member of the Antiviral Drugs Advisory Committee of the FDA and a member of the Clinical Pharmacology Subcommittee of the Advisory Committee for Pharmacological Science of the FDA. His honors and awards include an honorary doctorate degree from Uppsala University in Sweden, the Rawls Palmer Progress in Medicine Award from the ASCPT, and numerous named lectureships at universities throughout the world.
